As funny as the movie is, it’s really more poignant than funny. That poignancy enhances the humor, and overall the story drives the humor and not the other way around like most traditional comedies. I didn’t think it was possible for a movie to be warm and gritty at the same time, but IHTSBIH nails that balance. And despite being rated-R I think a lot of parents are going to end up bringing their teenage kids along for a second viewing, and young adults will do the same with their older parents. [T]his movie’s not like anything you’ve seen before, if nothing else you’re going to remember it and want to talk about it.
College Park was a nice, smooth premiere. Good sized crowd, like 350, loved the movie, had some fun during the pre-show, and was back to the hotel by midnight. Refreshing, and a nice warm-up for State College, which is going to be a zoo. Some of the highlights from the pre-show:
Girl: “This is a PG-13 story. So one time this guy was face-fucking me, and–”
[crowd erupts laughing]
Tucker: “DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT PG-13 MEANS!!! What movies are you watching???”
Nils: “13 does not mean the number of guys!”
-One funny line from a painfully rambling story:
Black Guy: “So, this girl says to me, ‘You can’t treat people like this who love you,’ but I say, ‘You need to love yourself first.’”
Nils “Who are you, Judge Joe Brown?” (more…)
I got nothing on this one. It was the sixth of six straight stops, and I was so fucking tired for this one I could barely get it done in the moment, much less remember funny things for a blog post. The tour is 31 stops; some nights, I’m just not on.
Of course, this was the stop that all my friends showed up to, and was the smallest stop in terms of theater size (only 150, whereas Blacksburg was 550, for example), so everything was dicked up for this. And for the pre-show, it was basically my law school friends and I riffing for the benefit of the crowd, and they asked me not to use that footage. I guess I could write the jokes out, but 90% of them were inside jokes and/or not that funny. Whatever. If you were there, you saw it, if not, no big deal.
Here are the pictures from the Washington DC stop.
Here is the video, which thankfully, is funny enough to make up for my lack of humor on this recap:
Blacksburg was awesome, it was the best stop we’ve had so far, and because of this, Nils and I are coming back to a see a football game here soon. Probably the Thursday night game on Oct 29th. For real, it was that great of a crowd. I know I busted on you guys a lot during the pre-show and Q&A, but it was legitimately an incredible night, and because we had such a blast, I am definitely coming back. On to the funny:
-There is the fact that NC State called in the BOMB SQUAD to sweep the building before the movie started, just in case.
-There was the fact that they turned off the fire alarms and had the fire marshall there to watch over everything, just in case a protester pulled the fire alarm falsely to ruin the movie.
-But in my mind, the entire protest debate can be summed up by the video we did. This thing cracks me up so much and really shows the ridiculousness of the situation, coming out of the mouths of the protesters themselves: (more…)
“I’m not going to write out some official looking sectioned off review, but I will say it totally kicked ass. At the moment [pre-release] it sort of sits in the shadow of “The Hangover”, but I feel once it releases it will surpass it.”
It doesn’t get much more southern than Columbia, South Carolina. I have to give the place credit though, there so many hot girls there. I haven’t seen that many hot girls with such tits in person in a long time. Well represented, ladies. On to the funny stuff, starting with Nils and I having fun with the crowd to lead off the show:
-This girl tells a story about how her nose starts bleeding while she’s straddling a guy and making out with him. She runs to the bathroom to clean up, and he comes up and starts fucking her from behind.
Nils: “This is the second blood-related story we’ve had in four days.”
Tucker: “I don’t care about your story, show us your tits!”
“The plot of this film: Tucker Max and two of his bros go to a bachelor party, meeting various cum sluts along the way. Whore bitches can’t get enough of Tucker Max’s bad boy personality, which is probably why so many of these twats want him inside of their vaginas. Tucker fucks a midget stripper and the world loves him for it, the end.”
Man, so much to write about. We still have the Columbia stop to go over, which had a bunch of funny stuff, and last night was, well, what you would expect. The protest bullshit was actually pretty calm and tame, and everything went off without a problem. And of course, there was a ton of funny there…but I can’t go over any of that right now.
I will write all of it up, complete with video, but that has to wait. I didn’t think it was possible, but later that night something happened that totally eclipsed 100 protesters and tons of press coming out to the movie:
If you haven’t seen this yet, you really need to, because it is both hilariously awesome, and absolutely offensive: Apparently, some people think my movie promotes rape.
I knew this was coming, and I was ready for it, but I am still a little bit shocked at how patronizing, out of touch, and ridiculous these “protesters” are. Check out some of the quotes (italics are mine):
“Johnson said though no one at Monday’s meeting had seen the movie, and only one counselor attending the meeting had read Max’s book that inspired the movie, the postings on his blog and the trailer for the movie were enough for the Center to know that the movie would be offensive.”
“It didnt even occur to me that there was anybody out there like [Max.]” (more…)
